EV Charger Types: A Smart Buyer's Guide

From portable chargers to fast DC stations: learn the pros and limits of each type, and see why a three-phase wall charger is the smarter choice for everyday use in residential and commercial buildings.

Four Main Types of EV Chargers

Each charger type is built for a different usage scenario; understanding the differences is the first step to choosing right.

Portable Charger

2.2–3.7 kW Full charge up to 24 hours

Portable and pluggable into a standard household outlet; suited to emergency or travel use, not primary daily charging.

  • Portable, no installation needed
  • Low upfront cost
  • Very long charging time
  • Not suited to primary, continuous use

Single-Phase AC Charger

Up to 7 kW Full charge in about 6–8 hours

Permanently wall-mounted with a single-phase connection; a reliable option for parking facilities with more limited electrical infrastructure.

  • Faster than portable
  • Permanent, safe installation
  • Limiting for several simultaneous users
  • Slower than the three-phase type

DC Fast-Charging Station

High power Up to 80% in tens of minutes

The fastest charging speed; suited to busy public stations and intercity routes, not everyday use in a building's parking lot.

  • Fastest charging time
  • Suited to high-traffic public use
  • High equipment and installation cost
  • Not suited to frequent, everyday use
Expert Recommendation

Why a 22 kW Three-Phase Wall Charger?

A portable charger is too slow for daily use, and a DC fast charger, despite its speed, isn't recommended for frequent, continuous use. A three-phase wall charger is the real sweet spot: fast enough for a nightly or daily charge, without putting extra stress on the battery.

This model can also be paired with the Payaman Energy Smart Hub to add load management, real-time monitoring, and real-time invoicing on top.
